Angkor Wat Temple

Angkor Wat Temple

Built from 802 to 1220 AD by the Khmer civilization, the temples at Angkor represent one of the most enduring and astonishing architectural achievements of humankind. The more than 100 stone structures that we see today are the surviving remnants of a grand administrative, religious, and social metropolis. The other buildings (public buildings, palaces, homes, etc.) were actually built from wood and do not exist anymore.

Conventional theories assume that the land where Angkor is located was chosen as the settlement spot due to its strategic position for military purposes, as well as its agricultural potential. However, other scholars think that the location and the arrangement of Angkor was based on planet-spanning sacred land from archaic periods.

Angkor Wat was built early in 1100s by Suryavarman over an estimated 30 years and honors Vishnu, the Hindu god. The ruins are a symbolic structure of Hindu cosmology. This is actually the biggest monument in the group, as well as the best preserved. The wonder is located about 4 miles to the north of Siem Reap and south of Angkor Thom, and Angkor Wat is only accessible from its gate to the west.

Angkor Wat consists of a huge temple that symbolizes Mt. Meru, a mythic mountain, and its 5 walls and moats are a representation of mountainous chains, as well as the cosmic ocean. This temple was a funerary temple built for King Suryavarman II. The vast compound’s short dimensions are aligned precisely along the north-south axis, and the east to west axis was diverted deliberately 0.75° to give its observers an anticipation of the equinox in spring for 3 days.

Teotihuacán Pyramids in the Valley of Mexico

Teotihuacán Pyramids in the Valley of Mexico

Teotihuacán is a sacred site that is about 30 miles northeast from Mexico City in Mexico. This is a very popular site to visit from the city, as these ruins are among Mexico’s most remarkable, as well as some of the most important in the world. Teotihuacán was built about 300 AD and is characterized by enormous monuments that have been carefully laid out based on symbolic and geometric principles.

The Temple of Quetzalcoatl is one of its most monumental structures, located in the center of the area and boasts its fine decoration and lavish offerings. The front of the temple has large, finely carved serpent heads that jut out from feathered collars that are carved into its stone walls. This temple has a pyramid built on top of it called the Feathered Serpent Pyramid, where over 200 ceremonially buried warriors’ skeletons have been found by archaeologists.

The Pyramid of the Sun is positioned on the Avenue of the Dead’s east side, is the 3rd biggest pyramid in the world, and the largest pyramid that has been restored in the Western Hemisphere. This structure hasn’t been completely understood yet, but is built over a sacred cave that has the shape of a 4 leaf clover. The first part of the Pyramid was built about 100 BC, being completed 400 years later.

The Pyramid of the Moon faces the northern plaza and has no discovered features in its interior, such as a cave. It is smaller than its neighboring pyramid, but appears to be the same since it is built on higher ground. This pyramid seems to have been built in a pattern to reflect the sacred Cerro Gordo Mountain to the north.

Bordj Bou Arréridj

Bordj Bou Arréridj

Most people take vacations to get away from their busy life. The city, the urban lifestyle, and the noise are a bit of what tourists try to run away from. Then Bordj Bou Arreridj, Algeria is where you could make that sweet escape. Just148 miles far from the capital city Algiers, Bordj Bou Arreridj is situated near Hondar Massif in the southern Kabylia Mountains, at an elevation of 916 meters from sea level. A trip to this city would be like a hike to a natural yet wondrous mountain resort.

The ruins of the first capital, Hammadid emirs, portray a historical fortified Islamic city. It was built in 1007 and demolished in 1152. And Bordj Bou Arreridj’s mosque, with a prayer room of 13 aisles and eight bays, is historically one of the largest in all of Algeria.

Although the city is hardly urbane, it is not too laid back that you would worry about getting there or how well you will be accommodated. There are rails and main roads coming from the capital and other fellow cities. And accommodations are very cheap yet very liveable as well. Bordj Bou Arreridj boasts of fine architecture starting with The Mosque. Although the building is of Islamic influence, the structure pretty much looks like a Cathedral too; this reminds tourists of the European influence on Algeria in the past. And like any other city Algeria, Bordj Bou Arreridj is also very scenic at night. Its commercial center is covered in thick reflective glass as in that of modern skyscrapers. If you want to enjoy Bordj Bou Arreridj, it would be best to tour its downtown on foot. And for a great nature trip, the Boumargad forest is highly recommended.

Jeddah

Jeddah

On the coast of the Red Sea lies the city ofJeddah. The metropolis is considered as Western Saudi Arabia’s major urban center. It is also the largest sea port among the areas surrounding the Red Sea and next to capital city, Riyadh, Jeddah is the second largest city and second profit-making capital. Its industrial district is considered as Saudi Arabia’s largest business cities next to Riyadh, Jubail and Yanbu.

Other major and global organizations are also situated in the city such as the International Association of Islamic Banks, the National Commercial Bank and International Islamic News Agency. The headquarters of the prevailing conglomerates in Saudi Arabia could also be found in King Abdullah Street. This district in Jeddah serves as the main hosts for commercial developments and business opportunities.

In the mid-town of the city, you could find Tahlia Street which, on the other hand, offers a wide array of fashion and shopping establishments. This area is teeming with shoppers who frequent the high-end boutiques like Burberry, Chanel, Gucci and Giorgio Armani.

Open air-art is also another of Jeddah’s features that turns the spotlight on. This started during the oil boom in the late 1970’s that encouraged the people to bring art on the street. As a result of such collective effort, the city now offers the world an enormous number of open-air works of art. These pieces of art form are scattered around the city, thus making Jeddah one of the world’s largest open-air galleries. Aside from this public display of artworks, tourists could also learn more about the city’s culture and history by visiting its museums. There are about a dozen of them that guarantee not just fun but learning at the same time.

Like other Saudi Arabian countries, Jeddah offers an arid climate. Its humid temperature also remains even during winter; the temperature in the afternoons is 25 °C and drops to 15 °C at night. On summer, temperature reaches as high as 40 °C and gradually drops to 30 °C as the nighttime comes. Rain visits the city in small amounts and usually during December. There were also occurrences of hail that were recorded and heavy thunderstorms also mark their winter season.
