Flag of Netherlands

The national flag of Netherlands comes in three colors. It has horizontal colors of blue, white and red. It was introduced in the year 1572 but was officially adopted only on the 19th day of February, 1937. This flag is known to be the first flag to three colors. Until today, this three color flag is considered to be the official national flag of the Netherlands.

With the three colors present in the flag of the Netherlands, you can easily set it apart from the rest. Its horizontal fesses are of equal sizes. There is a time when the Netherlands flag was composed not of red, white and blue but with orange, white and blue. The orange color present in that flag was associated to Prince William I of Orange, who is a Dutch prince. Prince William I was able to join the Dutch nationalists in their struggle for freedom from Spain. After they obtained independence from Spain, the Netherlands created a flag with horizontal colors orange, white and blue. This is done to show respect to Prince William I who struggled enough to provide independence to his people. Because the flag was first created to show respect to Prince William I, it was referred to as the Prince’s flag in the past.

However, in the middle of the 17th century, the orange dye in the flag was replaced by red. It is because the people have noticed that the orange dye was actually unstable. After some time of using it, the orange dye turned to red. It is the main reason why it was replaced by red. Red was then referred to as one of the official colors of the flag. It was on the year 1937 that the flag was officially adopted by the people of Netherlands.
