The Great Ziggurat of Ur is considered to be one of the largest ziggurats (which means “to build on a raised area”, are large pyramid like temples that were built in the Middle East during the time of the Sumerians. Although it is one of the most well preserved ziggurats in the area, the only remains from its original grandeur and size is but a mere 3 layers of solid mass, with only the lowest layer being part of the original structure.
