Devils Tower

Devils Tower

It’s quite intriguing that the first national monument in the United States is not made by the hands of men. In fact, this towering natural landmark means more to the American Indians than it is to the forefathers who established the colonies.

Bears Lodge, as others would often refer to it, is believed by American Indians as a sacred site. Knowing its significance, then President Theodore Roosevelt designated it as a national monument in 1906. That’s the Devils Tower as we know it today.

One might wonder why it was called as such. In truth, the landmark was supposed to be called as Devil’s Tower. But the apostrophe was inadvertently omitted when the proclamation was published. With no luck editing this clerical error, the name stands to this day. Rising over a thousand, it overlooks the Belle Fourche River. Its top is actually the size of a football field. Erosion has made it possible for people to view the tower’s magnificence. With more than 1,300 acres of vast area surrounding the area, it’s no wonder flora and fauna abound. Woodlands and pine forests cover much of the park while wildlife creatures roam around its grasslands.

If you are planning to take the Tower Walk – trekking the Devils Tower trail with a ranger – be sure to wear a good pair of walking shoes. It would also help if you could bring drinking water along the way.

Climate here is usually mild, but trails are not maintained during winter season. However, visitors can go for cross-country skiing during the cold months. Those who are into rock climbing or simply wish to spend some time at the top of the tower can do so by registering first at the visitor’s center. But because this is considered as a sacred site by American Indians, a voluntary climbing closure is implemented in the month of June.

Chiang Mai

Thailand on your mind? Where do you start a trip to a land as vast and as enchanting as Thailand? If you desire sun, sand and solitude in the beautiful, unspoiled islands and beaches, Thailand will not disappoint. On the other hand, if you happen to be a visitor who desires to experience something mystical, then Chiang Mai’s temples that seem to be frozen in time with an old-world feel are a must-see.

Chiang Mai excites the senses with its spectacular scenery and centuries of history. That Chiang Mai is picturesque and exotic – with rolling hills, serene lakes and cascading waterfalls, and majestic mountains — is just the tip of the iceberg. The city also basks in the golden glow of temples. Add to these the savory cuisine, the amiable people, the relaxing boat villages (or pulsating nightlife), and you have all the ingredients for a pleasurable stay.

Chiang Mai’s temple attractions may best be described in one word: amazing. With its glorious sunset to the intriguing site where ashes of a previous royal family remain, to centuries-old Buddha metal images, Wat Suan Dok beckons. There’s also the ancient Wat Chuang Man that’s known to date back to 1296, where Chiang Mai’s sovereign founder resided. Another temple visitors shouldn’t miss is the Wat Phra Singh, which lies on a compound with a beautiful chapel with remarkable murals and woodcarvings. If you’re interested in authentic Thai history & culture, the Chiang Mai National Museum — with its ancient artifacts, art works, Buddha images and combat weaponry – will be worth visiting. Meantime, shopaholics will most likely be delighted with the quality handicrafts at the bustling city emporium or night market.

Indeed, Chiang Mai is a jewel waiting to be discovered by first-time visitors, or those who did not have the time to get past other popular destinations like Phuket and Koh Samui during their first sojourn.

Soroti

Soroti

Although very provincial in surroundings, Soroti is one of the main commercial centers in eastern Uganda. The busy commercial center is punctuated by architectural structures speaking of the city’s rich cultural heritage. The city is also surrounded by the magnificence of nature’s art. The most famous of Soroti’s natural wonders is a rock formation from which you can get a splendid view of central Soroti. The Soroti rock presents a beautiful vista of Soroti and its surrounding areas as well as of Mount Elgon and Lake Kyoga. Tourists who wish to climb the Soroti rock should seek permission from the Town Clerk. Aside from the town panorama, what is behind the rock would give you a glimpse at Soroti’s colonial past. There you can find graves of residents engraved with the dates of their death. The various ages of these people who were buried behind the Soroti rock is testament to the unrestrained killings during Uganda’s colonial period.

Albeit highly commercialized and dotted with stalls and shops, the center of Soroti still features facades that are reflective of the Indian traders who once inhabited the town. The thriving businesses have cleaned up and refurbished the worn down buildings of the 1970s and transformed the center into the bustling commercial it is now. The religious establishments around town remain to be sites of interest for most tourists. There is a great variety of Muslim mosques and Hindu temples around Soroti. There are also Sikh temples and some Christian churches like the Anglican Cathedral and some small Pentecostal congregations. The Islamic burial rituals are also kept alive in the bath house located at the municipal cemetery. Many graves in this cemetery even have Arabic inscriptions.

Zamość Old Town

Zamość Old Town

If you are looking for a Renaissance town in Poland, visit Zamość.

Zamość Old Town is located in southeastern Poland. It is the perfect example of a Renaissance town from the 16th century. Walled cities were common in those days, and Zamość was no exception. There are seven fortifications along the walls that helped the military defend the city from invaders. These walls were built to last; 12 meters high and 2.5 meters thick. Three gates give access to the city, each with a drawbridge. Imagine walking through those gates to get to the city, and you may feel you’ve been transported back in time.

This town was the product of superb 16th century urban planning. In 1528, Jan Zamoyski wanted to build a “country within a country” and Bernardo Morando knew how to make it happen. It took them 25 years to design the town, and thanks to their careful planning, we can admire it to this day. The layout was rather simple; just three squares, right-angles streets, large plots for buildings and temples for all religions. In 1992, Zamość was included in the UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.

Places to see:

The Great Market Square– A perfect square in the heart of the town, it has eight tenement buildings with arcades along each side. These structures used to be shops and wineries. Today, they have been transformed into al fresco cafés where you can sit down, have a cup of coffee and watch the busy-ness go by.

The Town Hall– If you’re looking for a taste of history, this is the place to visit. Up in its tower, a trumpeter dressed in proper 16th century garb, plays the Zamość signal at noon.

Arsenal- If weaponry is more your thing, then visit the Zamość Old Town Arsenal. This is where Zamoyski’s trophies from earlier battles are kept, along with the military gifts he received. Cannons, firearms, swords, various types of armor and even a contemporary tank are on permanent exhibit.

The Three Pagodas

The Three Pagodas

For many centuries, the Chinese pagoda has been a symbol of China. A visit to the country wouldn’t be a complete one unless you see an authentically designed pagoda.

One of the greatest-looking pagodas in China is the Three Pagodas. It is a triangular arrangement of three elaborately designed pagodas at the base of Cangshan Mountain’s Yingle Peak, near Dali in Yunnan, China. It is believed to be the only remnant of Chongshengsi, which was the largest monastery in this town.

Qianxun Pagoda stands as the main pagoda among the three. It is square in shape and 69 meters high with a structural design similar to those made in the Tang Dynasty. It was erected during the reign of Emperor Fengyou of Nanzhao Kingdom. It has 16 levels and the marvelous whitewashed wall cover makes it more visible just a few yards away.

The two other pagodas are smaller than Qianxun with only 10 stories that’s 43 meters high. These two contain three copper calabashes, with each linked to a bell made of bronze. The Chinese traces back the two towers’ construction 100 years after Qianxun’s construction.

During some time between 1978-1979, excavators had uncovered various important Chinese artifacts and relics in Qianxun Pagoda. There were hand-written Buddhist scriptures and documents as well as several art pieces made of gold, silver, crystal, and wood. Others even found medicinal herbs along with Buddha statues and other precious stones such as quartz and jade.

The Three Pagodas had endured a number of earthquakes and typhoons over the 10 centuries it has witnessed. Nevertheless, all three remained resilient, proving the greatness and quality of Chinese architecture in its early years.

Just outside the Three Pagodas are trees, shrubs, pools of water, and cemented grounds that provide a very scenic spot that can easily captivate any tourists visiting the town.

Waterford

Waterford

Waterford, as Ireland’s oldest city, has lured millions of visitors every year. Well why not? If you come to think of it, the city does not only pride of being the oldest, but it also offers several places of interests that tourists and locals alike are bound to enjoy.
What are those places of interest?
Here is a list of them.

1. The Waterford City Hall
In some places, a city hall is just a solid structure with nothing but walls and desks inside of them. But that premise does not apply in this particular hall. This is because the building itself is a magnificent work of art designed by a local Waterford architect named John Roberts during 18th century. Currently, this building does not only house government officials and workers but it also holds the city’s municipal art collection.
2. Dungarvan Museum (Waterford County Museum)
This local museum takes you back in time as it narrates the history of Dungarvan and Waterford from Ice Age to Georgian periods with the use of a huge collection of photographs. The numerous photographs are also backed up by artifacts that include anything from trophies, accessories, old cameras and coin collection.
3. Reginald’s Tower Museum
By being considered to be the oldest tower made of mortared stone in the entire Europe, Reginald’s Tower Museum has rightfully claimed to be the most popular landmark in the area. Since its construction on 1003 A.D. the castle has been utilized as a military fortress, a prison and even a shelter. Now, after centuries of rich military and political history, it became the venue of the city’s civic and maritime museum.
4. Dunmore East Beach
This should be your final stop if you have grown tired of all the hustle and bustle in the city. The golden sandy shores offer rest and relaxation to anyone who wants to spend a lazy afternoon at the beach. Just a warning though, the beach can be pretty crowded during summer, so if you plan to take your kids with you, make sure that you help the lifeguard by keeping your eyes on them.

Wawel Royal Castle

Wawel Royal Castle

If you’re interested in castles, visit Wawel Royal Castle and take in its story, and its history.

Located in Krakow, Wawel Royal Castle was the center of Poland’s culture and politics until the 16th century. It started out as a small residence built by King Boleslaw Chrobry. Later, it was turned into a Gothic castle by King Kazimierz Weilki, but it burned down in 1499. King Zygmunt Stary then took over. In a span of 30 years, Italian architects built a magnificent Renaissance palace. The castle has managed to avoid further destruction and is preserved to this day. It is known for its beautiful arcaded courtyard, which has a rather impressive layout.

The castle was recovered by the Polish after the first World War and immediately began restoration until World War II. Restoration resumed after the war and the people were able to recover a good part of the castle’s earlier exterior and its interior decoration.

Like many other castles, Wawel Royal Castle is now a museum. Separated into five sections, each section requiring a different ticket, valid for a specific time of the day only. The sections include the State Rooms, the Royal Private Apartments and the Crown Treasury and Armory. There is a daily quota on the number of visitors in some sections, so arrive early if you want to see everything or call for reservations. There are certain periods throughout the year where individual visitors can take the tour free, but they have to have “free admission” tickets to get in. The castle is closed on New Year’s Day, the Easter weekend, November 1st and the 11th, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Random Fact:
A chunk from one of the castle’s columns was incorporated into the upper-left part of the Chicago Tribune Tower’s main entrance. It is a visual tribute to the Polish community in Chicago, which is the largest outside of Poland.
