Myanmar is one of the countries on the Indochinese peninsula. Its southwest coast is touched by the Bay of Bengal and its Irrawaddy Delta in the south contains a network of interconnecting canals and nine prime river mouths. Formerly known as Burma, Myanmar is considered as the Golden Land. Its culture is heavily influenced by Theravada Buddhism, combined with several local elements.
If there’s anything Myanmar is very popular for and sought after by tourists, it’s the Pagodas and temples which continue to exist in present-day Bagan, which was the capital of the former Bagan Kingdom. The Shwedagon Pagoda in particular is the most important pagoda as it reveals early British occupation in Burma during the first Anglo-Burmese War.
Other magnificent attractions in Myanmar include the limestone landscape of Mon State, the very tall Sakura Tower in Yangon, Myanmar’s capital, and the Yangon University of Medicine. Myanmar also has an interesting culture. One of its common practices is the ear-piercing ceremony at the Mahamuni Pagoda in Mandalay. Ear-piercing ceremony is a practice in Burmese culture for teenage girls who have just entered the first stage of womanhood. The shinbyu is the most important of the coming-of-age ceremonies for boys, when he enters the monastery for a short period of time as he is considered a beginner for Buddhism. The adults also practice the Nat worship as part of their religious culture.
Myanmar boasts of great Asian cuisine. The Mohinga is widely recognized as Burma’s national dish. The Mohinga is concocted fish soup with rice noodles. It’s like another version of the common Ramen. Vegetarian Dishes, Thai fragrant rice, and pickled tea are other Myanmar specialties that tourists love.
