Egypt

Egypt, or the Arab Republic of Egypt, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the entire world. It is located in Africa and is probably best known for its ancient Egyptian civilization that left behind its hieroglyphs, mummies and most spectacular of all, its large pyramids. There are also traces of its medieval heritage as well; it has many mosques, churches and monasteries thanks to Copic Christianity and Islam. Its most well know geographical feature, that also happens to dominate its interior, is the Nile, and the lush green, fertile well-watered valley that separate its Western and Eastern deserts.

Because the country’s economy is most dependent on tourism, it is a very easy country to enter and obtain a visa for. You will probably be entering the country via plane and will therefore land at Cairo International airport, where most international flights land. While in Egypt, for long-distances, the train will be the most convenient way to get around, but while in cities, the taxi is the most convenient and affordable means of travel. The official language of Egypt is modern Arabic, but many people also speak English, especially in well known tourist destinations. In order to be able to pay for things while visiting the country, you will need to use the Egyptian currency, the Egyptian Pound (EGP). You should note that tips or baksheesh are expected for any small favor done for you in Egypt. You should carry a stack of small bills with you for tips because no change will be given. People will be very blunt and ask for their tips out right, do not let this surprise you.
