The Republic of Haiti, as it is officially know, is a Caribbean country located in the Greater Antillean archipelago. Haiti made it to the international news early this year after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the island nation, causing its tourism industry to crumble with its structures. The disaster has left the country even more impoverished.
Haiti has been through the toughest of times, but its history of poverty and strife has not dampened the spirits and optimism of the Haitians. In the wake of the earthquake disaster, Haitians remain hopeful that their country can bounce back and welcome tourists again to its natural wonders.
If you are thinking about visiting Haiti, the good news is that there is no perfect season for coming to Haiti. The wet months are from April to November. And there are hurricanes between August and September. During these periods, the main hassle can come from transportation problems because of mud slides. The Haitian Carnival, on the other hand, happens every February. So if you plan to check it out, it is advisable to book your flight well in advance, and book your hotel as well to secure your slot. Also, expect prices to be higher during this time.
Haiti’s official currency is the gourde, although you can pay in US dollars, especially when buying big-ticket items. To be sure, when shopping around, make sure to ask if the price quoted is in USD or gourde.
